Over the next three years, The Fetch are developing an exciting new project that will tour to festivals, schools and community venues - The Ramayana-on-Wheels. Working with colleagues from the Punjab we will create several projects culminating in a beautiful, exciting and highly visual interpretation of this epic story of love and duty.
The first phase of work, DISCOVERING THE RAMAYANA, a workshop and performance project for young people will tour in Autumn 2009. A full tour schedule can be obtained by emailing
This programme of work has developed over many years working collaboratively with artists from the Punjab in particular Dr Mahendra Kumar and Shveta Kumar. Mahendra and Shveta are highly regarded as director/designer and performer in Indian Theatre. Under their guidance, in Autumn 2007 The Fetch Theatre undertook a two week visit to India in order to research performances based on the epic tale of ‘The Ramayana’. These performances are called Ram Leela festivals and are popular enactments of the mythological epic, Ramayana. Ram Leela celebrations form an integral part of the cultural life of the Hindi-speaking belt of North India. Although the story of Lord Rama and his comrades is so popular in India that it has amalgamated the psyche of the Indian mainstream irrespective of their religion.
The performances take place in every town and are acted out over a period of days, weeks or months, viewed by thousands of people from every walk of life, a unique fusion of spiritual and theatrical celebration.
From this inspirational research our project ‘The Ramayana on Wheels’ has developed. If you are interested in becoming a partner in this exciting project or would like to book a performance please contact
We are also interested in contacting British Asian performers who would like to audition for the project.
